Google Business Profile for Medical Practices: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your Google Business Profile is what patients see first when they search for a practice nearby — often before they ever visit your website. A complete, active profile is the single highest-impact local SEO asset your practice owns. This step-by-step guide walks through every field that matters, so your profile ranks well and converts the patients who find it.

A neglected Google Business Profile is a quiet leak of patients. It ranks lower, earns fewer calls and direction requests, and gives a weaker first impression than your competitors’ profiles. The good news is that most of the work is straightforward: complete every section, keep it active, and respond to patients. The steps below are ordered by impact.

1. Choose the correct primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals on your profile. Choose the most specific category that fits your practice — "Dentist", "Dermatologist", or "Pediatrician" each beat a generic "Health" or "Doctor". You can add secondary categories for additional services, but the primary one should match what most patients search for when looking for you.

2. List your services

Add every service you offer, with clear descriptions that include the terms patients search for. A complete service list helps Google match your profile to more searches and tells prospective patients exactly what you provide. Keep descriptions accurate and patient-friendly, not clinical jargon.

3. Write a keyword-aware business description

Use the business description to explain who you treat, what you specialise in, and what makes your practice worth choosing — naturally including the treatments and locations patients search for. Do not keyword-stuff your practice name or description; Google penalises it and it looks unprofessional. Write for the patient first, with relevant terms woven in naturally.

4. Add fresh photos

Practices with recent photos get significantly more direction requests and calls. Add exterior, interior, team, and treatment photos, and refresh them at least monthly. Photos signal that your practice is active and real, and they help prospective patients feel comfortable before they ever walk in.

5. Add appointment links

Use the appointment link field to send patients straight to your online booking page. Every step you remove between a search and a booking lifts conversions. If you support online booking, make it the primary action on your profile — it is the fastest path from a search to a patient.

6. Manage questions and answers

Patients can ask questions on your profile, and anyone can answer — which means unanswered questions sometimes get incorrect answers from strangers. Pre-seed common questions (hours, parking, insurance, new-patient process) with accurate answers, and monitor and respond to new questions promptly. This helps patients and signals an active, cared-for profile.

7. Respond to every review

Reply to every review — positive or negative — within 24 hours. Google rewards engagement, and prospective patients read your replies to judge how you treat people. Thank positive reviewers by name, and handle negative reviews professionally without arguing or revealing any patient information. Your responses are public marketing.

8. Manage multiple locations

If you have multiple locations, each needs its own profile with its own address, phone, hours, and photos. Do not list multiple locations under one profile, and never use a PO box or fake address to rank in a city you do not serve — both risk suspension. Keep each location’s information consistent with its website page and local citations.

The maintenance habit

A Google Business Profile is not set-and-forget. Activity signals matter: post updates at least twice a month, refresh photos regularly, keep responding to reviews, and update hours for holidays. A profile that goes quiet for months slowly loses the rankings and engagement it earned.
